Counselor Candidate Frequently Asked Questions
What credentials are required to be an Anchored Virtual (AV) counselor?
To be considered, a counseling applicant must meet at least one of the following criteria:
● A pastor or ministry leader (MDiv or equivalent) who has completed a Foundation in Biblical Counseling Certificate from CCEF or similar biblical
counseling certification.
● A counselor with a counseling degree (M.A. or above) or a closely related Masters with a biblical counseling certification.
Are AV counselors full-time employees?
Our counselor’s work as 1099 contractors. Each counselor is paid at the end of each month, for the sessions completed that month. Counselors can work to build their caseload up to full time hours or to maintain part-time hours based on their goals and availability.
Can AV counselors work outside the United States?
Yes, virtual counseling allows our counselors and counselees to work from anywhere with strong internet service. Anyone who is legally eligible to work in the United States, with a U.S. bank account, is eligible to work for AV, even if living outside of the U.S. Our counselors are considered 1099 Independent Contractors. We do not do tax withholdings, so each counselor is responsible for his/her own withholdings.
What kinds of training opportunities do you offer?
Ongoing training is a huge part of the culture of AV. We offer once-a-month training calls with outside experts from the biblical counseling movement, monthly case review calls, and book cohorts with monthly discussion calls. Our Director of Counselor Development is also available for more focused help and training and as needed.
Do you offer internships for those who need counseling experience?
Our counseling fellowship is a supervised internship, for qualified candidates who need to build more experience. Fellows fill out reports after each session and receive feedback from the Director of Counselor Development.
Can licensed counselors work for AV?
Yes, licensed counselors who share a commitment to biblical counseling philosophy and methodology can add value to our team and are welcome to apply. Licensed counselors should learn their state license’s requirements and limitations on counseling virtually across state lines before applying.
Do your counselors only do virtually counseling, or can they also do in-person counseling?
While the vast majority of our sessions are virtual, our counselors have the option to meet with clients in person. Those sessions are scheduled and payments are processed the same as virtual sessions. Each counselor is expected to uphold AV’s standard of care for virtual and in person sessions.
Do you offer benefits or retirement?
At this time, we do not offer benefits or retirement plans for our counselors.
What is the minimum number of sessions required for AV counselors?
Each counselor is expected to maintain a minimum caseload of 8 sessions per month. This allows us to cover the expense of onboarding and resourcing each counselor. From this baseline, we ask each counselor to work up to a minimum of 6 sessions per week. Most AV counselors fall within the range of 6-12 sessions per week.
How do AV counselors build their caseloads?
AV counselors primarily build their caseloads in three ways:
● Through availability. By keeping as much availability open on their scheduling calendar as possible, counselors make it easy for people to
schedule with them. For those who self-select their counselor from the website, availability is often a significant factor in who they choose.
● Through referrals. Our directors regularly receive inquiries about which counselor would be best for a particular issue. Among other factors,
our directors consider who is building their caseload as they make those referrals.
● Through networking. We ask each counselor to consider their own circle of influence. Who already has some established trust in them as a
counselor? What churches or ministry organizations in their area would be thrilled to partner with AV, and send counseling their way? How can social media be utilized to share about their work with AV?
What is AV’s hiring process?
Anchored Virtual accepts applications throughout the year and hires as needs arise. Our hiring process usually takes one to two months and is as follows:
1. An email is sent to selected qualified candidates with the AV organizational profile and a link to schedule an initial interview.
2. The candidate reads the AV organization profile, responds to the questions, and returns it to the Director of Counselor Development prior to
the 1st interview.
3. Initial Interview focuses on background, biblical counseling philosophy, and experience.
4. All candidates selected to advance to the 2nd interview receive case studies with response questions. The candidates complete the response
questions and return them to the Director of Counselor Development prior to the 2nd interview.
5. Second interview focuses on case studies and methodology.
6. For candidates who are considered for hiring after the second interview, a thorough reference check is conducted.
7. An offer is made, and upon acceptance, the onboarding process begins.
